Do Outfit Changes Matter?

The biggest reason for outfit changes is choice. With different outfits, you have different looks that allow you to appear professional and polished for the right audience. Whether you need a headshot for LinkedIn or your company website, photoshoots with outfit changes ensure you have a professional look for any occasion. At MG Marshall Photography, we encourage our clients to use outfit changes to build a versatile gallery of images that fit every platform.

Show Different Sides of Your Professional Brand

Choosing the right headshot to show your professional brand is essential. A well-tailored suit may look great on your firm’s website directory, while a simple blouse or blazer can help create a more approachable look on your personal website. Picking two or three outfit options will help you curate your image and showcase the right side of your professional brand for any occasion in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

Different platforms have different expectations. On LinkedIn or your firm’s website, you may want a formal look. Social media or your company’s conference website might need a more relaxed image that is easier for your audience to identify with. Scheduling a session with outfit changes ensures that you have a wide range of options when it comes time to choose the perfect headshot.

When you schedule your session with MG Marshall Photography, you are investing in a team that understands how to make every image count. Choosing the Right Professional Outfits for Your Headshot

When you get ready for a headshot session in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, it may be stressful to choose which outfits to bring, but it does not have to be. Follow a few simple steps to make sure you have the right professional outfits for your next headshot session.

           Start With a Classic Look

Pick an outfit with a fitted jacket or blazer in neutral colors to start. Shades of navy, charcoal, or black work well. This is a solid, professional look that can work in any industry and for directories or formal business profiles in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

           Add a Business-Casual Option

Choose another outfit that is a step down in formality. Think of a blouse, collared shirt (no tie needed), or a simple sweater. This is a perfect look for networking events, for a casual, creative industry, or for times when you want to portray yourself as approachable and friendly.

Pay Attention to Color, Fabric, and Fit

Brightly colored, busy patterns and logos are not ideal for a headshot. If you can, pick a solid color, though jewel tones such as emerald, sapphire, or burgundy can work very well in headshots. Look for natural fabrics and try to choose clothes that will resist wrinkles. Most importantly, your clothes should fit you well. Clothes that fit properly boost confidence and it shows on camera.

Easy Outfit Changes: Staying Organized on Photo Day

As you get ready for your headshot, remember that with a little planning, outfit changes are simple.

           Prep Everything in Advance

The day or two before your session, press or steam your clothing and hang everything in a garment bag so that it is ready to go and stays wrinkle-free.

           Plan for Quick Changes

Think about simple ways to change your outfit. You can start with a dress shirt, then add a blazer, scarf, or necklace for a quick change. Keeping it simple will save you time and allow you to focus on your session.

           Talk With Your Photographer

Ideally, before you get to the studio for your session, talk with your photographer about the different outfits you plan to wear and how they will work. We will be able to help you plan and also ensure that the session will be organized and run smoothly.

           Bring a Small Touch-Up Kit

It is always a good idea to bring a few key items in a small makeup bag. Things like a comb, hairspray, blotting papers, or extra makeup can go a long way and allow you to make a quick touch-up in between outfit changes. This can make all the difference, especially on hot and humid days in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX.

When it comes to advancing your career in the Dallas area, there is a good chance your LinkedIn profile is one of the first places recruiters, prospective employers, and new connections will learn about you. Of all the content on your profile, the photo you choose is typically what is used to form their initial impression. That is why investing in a LinkedIn-optimized headshot with MG Marshall Photography is more than just another box to check; it is a smart strategy to help your career reach new heights in this part of Texas.

The Central Role of LinkedIn in Professional Networking

The old ways of doing business are no longer what they once were. The digital age has changed how professionals connect, do research, and form business relationships. In today’s Dallas-Fort Worth job market, LinkedIn is the place to be, whether you are building your career, seeking new talent, or sourcing potential business partners across Texas. Here is how it breaks down for professional networking:

           A Recruiter’s Best Friend

LinkedIn is where recruiters go to find and vet the most promising candidates. It is also one of the fastest ways to research companies, job roles, and industry trends. Recruiters expect to see high-quality photos, especially when they are reviewing candidates in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, and that is exactly what we create at MG Marshall Photography. If your LinkedIn profile lacks a professional photo or has a subpar one, it is that much easier for them to move on. After all, you cannot stand out in a crowd if you are not in it. Hiring professionals need a way to recognize your photo and match it to your resume, and a clear, professional headshot will do the trick every time.

Before ever meeting face to face, anyone who connects with you on LinkedIn will get to know you through that profile photo. Your headshot is the gateway to your digital world. In fact, research shows that LinkedIn profiles with high-quality headshots are more likely to be viewed and engaged with than those with lower-quality photos. When your image is approachable and professional, you are far more likely to hear back from viewers and see new opportunities land in your inbox.

Think of your LinkedIn photo as your visual calling card. Before viewers ever get a chance to read your profile, your photo is the element that makes a lasting first impression. At MG Marshall Photography, we see every headshot session as a chance to help you present a polished, approachable version of yourself. Do you want to enhance your professional image, or hold it back? Take control of that first impression and start with an image you can be proud of.

A high-quality LinkedIn headshot demonstrates to viewers that you take your career and attention to detail seriously. A grainy selfie, on the other hand, sends a message that you do not care about personal branding. The same is true for unprofessional, low-quality images such as those cropped from group photos at events or parties. When you start with a solid headshot, you set the tone for the rest of your profile.

Professional success is always built on a foundation of trust, and your image goes a long way toward building trust with viewers, even before you get the chance to meet them in person. A friendly expression, a clear, well-taken photo, and a polished appearance help viewers get to know and trust you. When your profile picture feels like a true representation of who you are, viewers are far more likely to reach out and get in touch.

Key Elements of a LinkedIn-Optimized Headshot

If you think your LinkedIn profile could use a boost, do not overlook the importance of the right headshot. Remember that looking great on Instagram is not the same as looking your best on LinkedIn. Here are a few things we at MG Marshall Photography tell our Dallas clients to keep in mind:

           Framing and Composition

LinkedIn compresses your image into a small circle on the screen, so keep that in mind when choosing or cropping your headshot. Get in close, shoulders up, with your head taking up about 60 percent of the frame. This will keep your image clear and easily recognizable, even when it is displayed as a small thumbnail.

           Background and Attire

Keep your background simple so viewers focus on you. Neutral, out-of-focus backgrounds work well. As for your wardrobe, aim for business-appropriate attire that suits your industry or field. Sometimes this means a suit and tie, but not always. Depending on your industry or role, it might also be a jacket or sweater with a pair of well-tailored slacks. Regardless, make sure what you wear is well fitted and in solid, neutral colors that flatter your complexion and do not distract. Patterns, logos, and flashy prints are best left at the door.

           Expression and Image Quality

As a general rule, choose a high-resolution, well-lit photo that represents what you currently look like. There is nothing worse than connecting with someone and having your profile photo look nothing like what they expected. Keep your expression natural and friendly. A smile is a universal sign of approachability, and nothing will put viewers at ease faster. In this case, less really is more. No filters or extreme edits are needed. This is the kind of flattering, true-to-you image we focus on at MG Marshall Photography.

As a professional, one of the first things people notice is your headshot, whether it appears on your online profiles on LinkedIn, your company directory, or your personal business cards. At MG Marshall Photography, we know that before you schedule a shoot with the first photographer who pops up in your search results, it is important to consider one of the most fundamental questions: do you want your headshots taken indoors or outdoors? Both options have their own pros and cons, and depending on your role and how the image will be used, choosing the right one can make a real difference in how you are perceived in this part of Texas.

Indoor Headshots: Studio Shots and Full Control

Studio headshots, also called indoor headshots, have been around for a long time and are still a favorite for many professionals. The term “studio shot” is used to describe a headshot with a neutral and distraction-free background that is taken completely indoors. The result is a timeless image that works for a wide variety of industries throughout the region. When you schedule studio headshots with MG Marshall Photography, our goal is to give you a controlled environment where every detail is carefully managed for the best possible result.

           A Neutral and Professional Background

A simple, neutral background is another major advantage of indoor headshots, as it allows the viewer to focus on the subject, which is you. Solid colors and unobtrusive texture in the background ensure that there are no distractions and all eyes are on you. Professional and traditional industries such as finance, law, and corporate roles usually prefer indoor headshots, and many businesses also have other employees pictured with neutral backgrounds to maintain a sense of continuity. Our team at MG Marshall Photography is very intentional about helping your headshot match your company’s existing visual style.

           Weather Is No Issue

Last but certainly not least is the advantage of being indoors during your photo shoot. Many photographers have their own studio for headshots, but when it is not available, almost any indoor location will do. The advantage of this is that you do not have to worry about the typical North Texas weather and how it might affect your session, including sudden downpours, unpredictable changes in lighting, or heat and humidity that make it uncomfortable to get your hair just right. When you work with MG Marshall Photography, we plan your indoor session so that weather never has the chance to interfere with your photos.

The Appeal of Outdoor Headshots: Authenticity and Context

On the flip side, outdoor headshots have also seen a surge in popularity in recent years. There are no right or wrong answers here, but if you are curious about getting an outdoor headshot in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, here is a quick rundown on why people prefer having them outside.

           Utilizing Natural Light

Arguably one of the biggest advantages that outdoor locations have is the soft and natural light, especially during the popular “golden hour.” When the sun is setting or rising, the light it produces creates a natural, approachable warmth that is flattering on just about anyone. Outdoor headshots can also appear to be more natural and less staged than indoor headshots, which is why many people in Texas prefer them.

           Dynamic and Contextual Backgrounds

Outdoor locations have another major advantage over studio shots: the backgrounds they allow for. While having a neutral background might be a good idea for some professions, if you want to inject a little more personality into your headshot, picking a location that reflects your personality and style is a great way to go. If you work in a field like real estate, design, architecture, or engineering, an outdoor headshot with a background related to your area of work might be a good choice. There are many beautiful, photo-worthy spots across Dallas-Fort Worth, TX that can be great for your headshot.

Key Factors for Dallas Professionals to Consider

Of course, not everything about outdoor headshots is sunshine and roses. The biggest challenge with outdoor headshots is the weather. Since you are at the mercy of the sun and clouds, you might find yourself needing to reschedule if a rain shower or high winds pop up. Lighting and weather can also change quickly outdoors, so a professional photographer is essential, and some flexibility is also required.

           Your Industry and Brand Message

Think about what the image is going to be used for and the impression you are trying to create. Different industries have different norms for what is an appropriate headshot and the style you should be going for. Conservative or more traditional industries like law, finance, and similar fields often require a more neutral and professional headshot, usually with a plain background, to match their website and social media. These industries are usually best served by an indoor headshot. Fields like marketing, tech, design, and others that are more fast-paced or creative can usually experiment a bit more and opt for an outdoor headshot if it suits your overall brand and personality better.

           Intended Use of the Headshot

If you will be using the headshot for business and professional purposes only, such as company websites, directories, and business cards, we would still suggest going with a classic and polished indoor headshot. However, if the headshot is going to be used for social media and for personal branding purposes, such as for speakers, podcasters, and coaches, an outdoor shot might be the right pick. It is also perfectly fine to have both indoor and outdoor headshots so that you have options for different platforms.

           Personal Style and Comfort

The last and perhaps most important part is your own style and comfort. Are you a person who feels more comfortable and authentic outdoors or indoors? The more at ease and natural you are during the photo shoot, the better it will show in the end result. Only you can decide where you would like to have your headshot taken, and it is just a matter of which setting best fits your style.

There is no single answer to the question, and the right choice is entirely up to you. Outdoor headshots can help to make a lasting impression and add some personality to your image, whereas indoor headshots are the time-tested, classic choice that looks sharp and clean. If you are still unsure which option would be a better choice for you, your next best step is to talk to a professional photographer. Here at MG Marshall Photography, we specialize in Dallas professional headshots throughout Dallas-Fort Worth, TX and across Texas, and we can be of assistance if you are still not sure which is the right path for you. We can also work with you to create the best image in whichever environment you feel most at home and help you take the first step toward making the right impression.

A headshot is pretty much what you’re thinking: your name in visual form. It is a close-up, framing you from the shoulders up with the camera centered on your face. The purpose of a headshot is to present you as professional, approachable, and, most importantly, confident. When we photograph headshots at

Places you will use headshots: they are a must-have for nearly any LinkedIn user, company team page, corporate directory, speaker bio page, event page, or even the jacket of your first published book. In most industries across Dallas–Fort Worth and throughout Texas, that means you too.

What is the aesthetic? Professional headshots have a classic, clean look and feel. Lighting is flattering and even, backgrounds are simple, and subjects are often asked to make direct eye contact with the camera. The end result is a clear, polished image that instantly lets people know, “Who is this person?”

What Is Branding Photography? Telling Your Story

Where headshots are personal, branding photography zooms out. Rather than zeroing in only on your face, a branding photo session creates an entire collection of photos that tell a story about your personal brand, business narrative, or services in Dallas–Fort Worth, TX. In our branding sessions at MG Marshall Photography

           Where do branding images appear?

Think about where you use pictures. Websites, social media, marketing ads, print brochures, email newsletters, and other marketing channels all rely on visuals. Branding photos go wherever your content goes to help you maintain a consistent, instantly recognizable visual style.

           What makes branding photography special?

Storytelling and variety. That means a range of photos, from headshots and group shots to full-body and candid images, as well as detailed shots of products or work in progress. A branding session will often include different locations, different poses, creative props, and set-ups that give each picture its own personality while still aligning with your overall brand. For many professionals across Dallas–Fort Worth, TX, choosing between a simple headshot and a full branding session can feel confusing, but understanding the differences helps you invest in the right session for your goals.

Headshots vs Branding Photography: Let’s Compare

To make it even easier, here is a breakdown of the two.

           Focus and Subject

The subject is typically one person (you), and the focus is on your face, expression, and personality. Branding photos capture people, places, processes, products, and anything else that will help paint a fuller picture of the business or person being photographed.

           Scope and Deliverables

A headshot session usually produces a small number of select photos, often just one or two final edited images chosen from the session. A branding session typically delivers a set of images numbering in the dozens, covering a range of scenes and creative concepts that you can use across your marketing.

           Background and Setting

Headshots are usually taken with simple backgrounds to keep the focus entirely on the subject. Branding sessions embrace the environment. Expect to see photos showing your workspace, your tools, and “your world.”

           Strategic Purpose

Headshots establish recognition and credibility. They answer the question, “Who is this person?" Branding photos are about connection and trust. They answer the question, “What is this brand all about?” Branding photography in Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas gives you a flexible library of visuals that support every part of your marketing strategy.

Here are a few scenarios to help you decide what fits your needs:

When a Professional Headshot Makes Sense:

Ideal when you need a sharp, classic image to include on your LinkedIn profile, your company’s About page, or for a speaker profile, bio, or event listing.

Perfect when your company is updating its employee directory or contact list and you want everyone’s photos to be consistent in terms of style and background.

A great fit when you are a job seeker submitting applications or publishing articles where you need a generic, professional photo that presents you clearly and professionally in Dallas-Fort Worth and beyond.

When Branding Photography Is Worth the Investment:

Best when you run a business or creative venture, manage a team of people, coach, or work in a field where your story is a key component of your brand.

Ideal if you are launching a new website or marketing campaign and want a collection of images to support a broad range of visual assets and touchpoints. Think social media, marketing ads, email newsletters, brochures, press kits, or other marketing collateral that reach clients around Dallas-Fort Worth, TX and across Texas.

A strong choice when you want to show your face (yes!), but you also want to display the personality, energy, and character that define your business or personal brand.

Getting ready for a professional headshot session in Dallas, Texas? Your hair and makeup can make all the difference. The goal is to look natural, polished, and confident while bringing out your personality. Whether you’re an executive, actor, or author, your appearance on camera plays a big part in the impression you make. To help you stand out for all the right reasons, here are some practical hair and makeup tips to nail your headshot.

           The Do’s

           1. Keep It Natural

Your headshot should showcase the best version of you. Stick to makeup and hairstyles that match your everyday professional or personal look. Soft, clean, and approachable styles photograph best—they make you look genuine and relatable. Avoid going overboard; the goal is to look like yourself on your best day.

           2. Use Matte Products

Shiny or shimmery makeup can reflect light in ways you don’t want, creating distracting highlights in your photos. Go for matte foundations, powders, and lipsticks to keep your look polished. Matte products also work better with studio lighting, giving your skin a natural, balanced finish.

           3. Prep Your Skin

Healthy, fresh skin always looks great on camera. The night before, give your skin a light exfoliation to smooth things out, and follow up with a good moisturizer to keep it hydrated. Women might want to use a light primer under their makeup for an even base, while men can opt for a clean-shaven or neatly groomed look.

           4. Style Hair Neatly

Your hairstyle should reflect your typical professional style—just a bit more polished. Brush or style your hair neatly and use a light-hold hairspray to tame any flyaways. Avoid overloading on product, as it can make your hair look stiff or greasy on camera. Simple, classic hairstyles often work best for a professional setting.

           5. Stick to Neutral Tones

When it comes to makeup, neutral shades are the way to go. Browns, taupes, and soft pinks work well to subtly enhance your features without stealing the show. If you’re using lipstick, pick a shade close to your natural lip color to keep things elegant and understated. This way, the focus stays on your expression.

           6. Go With What/Whom You Trust

If you’re hiring a hairstylist or makeup artist, choose someone you trust or, better yet, someone you’ve worked with before. The day of your shoot isn’t the time to try a completely new look or experiment with unfamiliar products. Feeling comfortable and confident in your appearance is key!

            7. Bring Touch-Up Tools

If your shoot is going to take a while, pack a small brush, comb, or any styling tools you might need to adjust your hair. Men can bring a lightweight pomade or gel to keep things neat without adding too much shine. A quick touch-up here and there will help you stay polished throughout the session.

           The Don’ts

1. Avoid Over-the-Top Looks

Unless you're putting together a creative or acting portfolio that calls for bold choices, it’s best to steer clear of heavy makeup, smoky eyes, bright lips, or intricate hairstyles. These dramatic looks can overshadow your natural self and feel out of place in professional headshots. Think polished but authentic!

           2. Skip Bold Colors

Bright eyeshadow, heavy contouring, and deep, unnatural shades can come across as harsh on camera. The same goes for over-styled or overly sculpted hairstyles—they can take attention away from your face. Stick to soft, balanced colors and natural styling for an approachable and professional vibe.

           3. Don’t Forget About Your Eyebrows

Eyebrows play a big role in framing your face, which is why you should not neglect them! Ladies should fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder for a fuller look. Gentlemen should keep their brows tidy by trimming or brushing them while maintaining their natural look.

           4. Avoid Last-Minute Changes

Big changes right before your shoot? Not the best idea. Avoid fresh haircuts, new highlights, or trying unfamiliar skincare products just days before your session. These can lead to unexpected results and might leave you feeling less confident in your final look. Stick to what you know works for you!

           5. Skip Glossy Products

Shiny isn't always your friend in photos. Lip gloss, oily hair treatments, or overly dewy foundation can reflect light and cause distracting glare. Go for soft, matte finishes instead—they photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you.

           6. Don't Overdo Anything

Less is more when it comes to headshots. Too much foundation can look cakey under the camera, and overly stiff or “perfect” hairstyles can feel unnatural. Instead, aim for subtle enhancements that highlight your personality in the best way. Balance is key!

The background you choose for your professional headshot does more than just frame your face; it shapes how people see you. At MG Marshall Photography, we've seen firsthand how background choices can make or break the message you're trying to send. Let's explore how different backgrounds can affect your image and help you make the right choice for your professional goals.

           Conveying Professionalism

Your headshot's background plays a big part in showing people you mean business. Think clean and simple, like a neutral gray or white background. It’s a safe and smart choice that keeps the focus where it should be: on you. Headshots with these backgrounds work especially well for corporate roles and executive positions, as they send a clear message of reliability without any distractions. Just remember, a messy or too-casual background might make people question your professional judgment.

           Aligning with Your Industry

Different fields call for different vibes, and your background should match your professional world. Creative types, such as designers or artists, can get away with (and even benefit from) more dynamic backgrounds like exposed brick or artfully blurred city scenes. These backgrounds may be interpreted as "I'm innovative and energetic." However, if you are in the legal, finance, or healthcare sector, you'll want to stick to clean, traditional backgrounds that reinforce trust and expertise.

           Setting a Tone of Approachability

If you want to appear friendly and accessible, your background can help with that. Soft colors, natural lighting, or outdoor settings can make you seem more approachable, which is perfect if you're a consultant, therapist, or anyone who works closely with clients. On the flip side, darker backgrounds or high-contrast settings can help project authority and leadership. These are useful when you are in a position that needs to command respect.

           Suggesting Modernity or Tradition

The texture and style of your background send subtle messages about your approach to work. Glass panels or city backdrops suggest innovation and forward-thinking—qualities that people often look for in tech professionals or entrepreneurs. If your work is all about stability or connecting with nature, traditional office settings or natural environments might be a better option. Your background should help people understand your values before you even say a word.

           Enhancing Visual Contrast

A good background does more than look nice; it makes you look better. The right contrast between your outfit and background can help you stand out in the photo, while complementary colors create a polished, put-together look. It is wise to choose a background that enhances your features, and your keen attention to this detail is something your audience will most likely notice. This will reflect positively on you, as it demonstrates thoroughness and accuracy.

If you want to make a lasting impression, choose a background that fits your personal brand and improves how you present yourself. Standing in front of a camera can be overwhelming for many people. The pressure to “look good” for corporate headshots or personal portraits often leads to stiff poses and forced smiles. That said, the secret to great photos isn’t about perfection. It’s about feeling relaxed and confident. If you have a photoshoot coming up, here are some simple tips to help you look and feel like the best version of yourself.

           Get to Know Your Photographer

Getting comfortable with your photographer will help create a safe environment for you to be authentic. Start by chatting with them about your goals, concerns, and ideas. Whether it’s your first photoshoot or your tenth, an experienced photographer, like those at MG Marshall Photography, will guide you through the process. Their job is to make you look your best, so lean on their expertise and enjoy the collaboration.

Move and Loosen Up Your Body

The best way to tackle stiff poses is to literally shake it off. Stretch, roll your shoulders, or even do a little dance to loosen up before your session. If it helps, you can even ask the photographer if they can play some of your favorite tunes during the shoot. Moving your body helps release tension and promotes more natural, relaxed poses. Remember, just a small shift in posture can completely change the energy of a photo.

            Break the Ice with Conversation

A little small talk can go a long way in easing your nerves. Chatting about something unrelated to the shoot, like a recent movie or shared hobbies, can help you relax and get out of your own head. This can help you forget about the camera in front of you and focus on the moment. Much like loosening up your body, engaging in relaxed conversations helps maintain natural body language, making you appear less self-conscious.

           Practice Gentle Facial Expressions

Nothing ruins a photo faster than a forced smile. Instead, practice soft, natural expressions in front of a mirror. Observe how your face looks when you're relaxed and at ease. Then, think of something that genuinely makes you happy. This can be a favorite memory or a funny joke you love. Let those real emotions guide your expression. Authentic feelings will shine through in your photos, making them feel effortless and less posed.

           Trust the Photographer’s Direction

Aside from being your most authentic self, your photographer is your next best weapon to look amazing in every shot. Trust your photographer’s pointers as they know what they’re doing! They have an expert eye for finding your best angles, suggesting flattering poses, and making adjustments to create a polished final image. Professional photographers have all kinds of tricks to help you look your best, so relax and let them lead.

Don’t Focus on the Final Outcome

It’s easy to stress about getting the “perfect” shot, but letting go of that pressure can actually improve your photos. Instead of fixating on the end result, shift your mindset and treat the photoshoot as an opportunity to celebrate yourself and have fun. Think of it as your chance to try something new, play with your own style, or simply enjoy being in the spotlight. Trust the process, and you’ll end up with images that truly reflect your personality.

At MG Marshall Photography, we’re all about making you feel relaxed, confident, and authentically you. Today, potential employers or clients often look to your online profile to get to know you. Since your profile is their first impression of you, having an outstanding profile picture will help set the right tone for future interactions. A great headshot will show you’re approachable and capable. Meanwhile, a poorly done photo could send the wrong message about your professionalism. Below are ways professional headshots can make or break your online profile.

           Establish a Good First Impression

First impressions happen in seconds, and your headshot is usually the first thing people notice. A professional photo conveys confidence, skill, and trustworthiness. These are qualities that can grab the attention of recruiters or potential business partners. On the other hand, a casual selfie or poorly-lit shot might make people question your level of professionalism. It can create a negative impression before you even have a chance to showcase your skills or personality.

            Enhances Your Personal Branding

Your personal brand is what makes you stand out, and a professional headshot will help you build that identity. It helps align your online presence with your career goals by reflecting traits like leadership or creativity. Having a consistent, high-quality image across all platforms strengthens your brand and helps you connect more authentically with your audience. Without a strong headshot, your personal brand can fall flat, leaving you with an unmemorable or inconsistent online presence.

            Increases Professional Opportunities

A sharp, well-done headshot can open many doors in your career. Profiles with professional photos tend to get more attention from recruiters and hiring managers because they show you care about your image. Entrepreneurs also benefit from headshots that build trust with clients, making them more likely to engage with your business. On the flip side, unprofessional photos may reduce your chances of connecting with potential employers or clients, potentially limiting career growth or business opportunities.

Shows You Pay Attention to Details

The quality of your headshot says a lot about your professionalism. A professionally taken photo shows that you value precision. It demonstrates that you know how to present yourself effectively and are willing to invest in your image. This can involve thoughtful choices like selecting the right backdrop, framing, and ensuring the lighting highlights your best facial features. In contrast, a hastily taken photo may break your credibility and leave a negative impression, suggesting that you don’t pay attention to important details.

Skilled portrait photographers, such as the team at MG Marshall Photography, can tailor your image to reflect the expectations of your industry and role. If you’re in the corporate world, a polished, formal headshot is ideal. On the other hand, if you’re a business owner or are in design, a photo with more pop may be more fitting. This signals that you understand industry norms. Failing to choose an appropriate style for your industry can make you seem out of touch with your field, causing you to lose your audience's attention.

Have you ever scrolled through LinkedIn and noticed people’s profile photos? What impression of them do they evoke? Do you get the same feeling from a photo of someone that looks like it was taken at a family function as that of someone who has a professional headshot? As I’ve written in a previous post

Jennifer was using this photo as her LinkedIn profile photo. She looks happy, her face is clearly visible and you get a sense of what she looks like, but it doesn’t look professional. When we spoke during our consultation, she expressed a need for a photo that looked professional, but also showed her personality.

We did a range of poses with and without the jacket, which resulted in different looks that she can use for different professional occasions. Her care-free, laid-back side is more evident in the photo on the left above. However, the photo on the right still captures her personality while projecting a very professional, even executive look. Her defined hairstyle paired with a hip pair of glasses and classic outfit means she projects a modern, updated feel. Further, she is warm and engaging in all the photos, but she will likely be taken more seriously during a job hunt with the two professional photos.

Showing the personality of your company through your headshots can help to stand out from the competition. This could be as simple as having your employees headshots done in a more editorial style, among other things. Sometimes, though, your brand lends itself to something truly different.

So, they had a great opportunity to do something different with their headshots. Instead of doing a standard headshot of each of their C-Suite and Executive staff, they highlighted the fun personality of their company (and their product) by shooting fun and silly headshots. We used various props that supported their brand and let each person just be their fun and silly selves. These were then put together as one elongated photo and is now used on their “About us” page of their website. These headshots truly capture the spirit of their company and their product!

Prepping for the Shoot, Part 4 – Hair, Makeup and Skin

I’m often asked about how to style hair and makeup for business headshot photoshoots. My advice is always to look as much like you do at work as possible. Don’t wear more makeup than you normally would and don’t try a new hairstyle right before the shoot.

Hair should be neat, professional, and how you normally wear it for work. Avoid getting your hair cut right before the shoot. If you decide to have a stylist do your hair, make sure to do a test run in advance of the shoot.

           Prepping Skin (yes, men too!)

Don’t do any extreme beauty regimens right before your shoot, like facial peels, tanning or extensive exfoliating. Your skin can look very irritated.

A light and gentle exfoliation IS recommended for both men and women.

The night before brush your lips with your toothbrush to help get rid of any dead skin.

Make sure skin is clean, free of food particles. Don’t worry about blemishes and temporary irritations, as these can be removed or reduced in PhotoShop.

Shave the morning of the shoot. A 5 o clock shadow can’t be Photoshopped easily. If you have facial hair, but sure to trim and clean it up before the shoot. Use cooling gel or aftershave to help with skin irritation.

            Women:

Get rid of any unwanted hair a few days before your shoot. Clean up brows and upper lip hair.

Makeup should be natural and what you would normally wear to work during the day.

Avoid wearing strong colors of lipstick unless that’s what you normally wear.

Prepping for the shoot, part 3 – What to Wear

You want to get as much mileage out of business headshot as possible, so staying away from trends is a good idea. Simple, classic and professional is always recommended. You want to look professional in your photo. Clothes should be clean and well pressed. I always recommend my clients bring their clothes and change in the studio to prevent wrinkling on the drive.

           Not Recommended

            - Rules can always be broken, but here are some basic guideline on what NOT to wear for a business headshot.

Busy patterns (and plaids) that could be distracting, or colors that may over-power you (very bright pinks, or candy-apple red)

Colors that blend with your skin tone

Deep-cut blouses that show too much cleavage. Scoop neck, Boat neck, and Crew neck photograph well.

Tank Tops or shoulder-less shirts, unless worn under a tailored jacket

Clothes that have no form, like square-cut shirts, unless worn under a tailored jacket. This often results in an unflattering frumpy-looking portrait

Prepping for the shoot, part 2 – What to Wear

Variety: It’s often advantageous to be photographed in a variety of outfits, at least two. This gives you flexibility in how the photos can be used. You may want a more casual photo for personal use. Perhaps you are speaking at a conference and want a slightly different look. Maybe you’re a professional who has written a book. Consider all the ways you may use your headshots.

           Consider the three photos above.

            Casual:

On the left, Aubra is in a casual sweater. A casual outfit is naturally relaxing and will promote a casual body language that translates into a more laid-back, approachable feel to a photo. This type of photo could work for a personal profile photo. It could also work great in industries that tend to be more casual in appearance and atmosphere.

            Professional:

The second and third photos are more professional looking, but have different feels to them. The center photo conveys a feeling of strength and confidence. The colors of her outfit soften her overall appearance balancing her strength with a softness that makes the photo feel approachable, though it is still professional. The lightness of the clothing, coupled with the brighter background, also make her face more visible, drawing the viewers eyes to her eyes, conveying, again her strength and confidence. IN this photo she comes across as a leader, perhaps even a C-suite level executive. The photo on the right is also professional but, because of the open jacket and cocked head feels a little more casual. This balances the more formal black of her jacket, again maintaining her approachable personality.

Prepping for the Headshot Shoot, part 1 – What to Wear

One of the most important decisions you’ll make about your headshots is what to wear! Here are some things to consider when choosing outfits for Business Headshots:

           Audience:

It’s always best to wear what is appropriate to what you do and your industry. Bankers/Financial Industry will tend to be more formally dressed (suit and tie), while realtors have more flexibility in their attire and are often more casual. A doctor might want some shots in a lab coat. How do you dress when meeting with clients?

In the four samples below, the difference in intended audience is obvious.

On the left, Mickey is a realtor. She wanted to ensure her personable, open, and down-to-earth personality came through in the photo. For her use, industry, and personality a more casual and loose photo was best with casual clothing to add to the effect.

Second from the left, Fiona needed photos to submit to a beauty pageant she was participating in. Her very dressy and formal clothing were most appropriate to that audience, yet she wanted some of her fun-loving personality to come through as well so we had her barefooted and on the floor in this photo.

Kavitha, in the third photo from the left, is an Attorney and as such needed a photo that says professional, serious, tough. For her photo it was appropriate to have more formal business attire and a more formal posture.

An Anesthesiologist, Joseph, in the photo on the far right, wanted one of this photos to reflect an approachable, professional image that clearly showed he is a doctor.

You need a good professional photographer, but every photograph looks the same! How do you decide which is better than another? Here are some tips for evaluating a photographer’s work:

           The Basics

Are the photos, or at least the eyes, in focus? This seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many blurry photos there are out there!

Are the backgrounds subtle and not distracting from the people in the photographs?

Does the light accentuate and bring emphasis to the person’s face? Id the light flattering?

What is the first thing you notice when looking at the photo?

           The Subject

Clothes are not distracting from the person

Hair and makeup are not distracting

Person’s smile is genuine, not forced or posed

Subject’s eyes have life and are not fixed or lifeless

Facial expression feels natural and show personality

Is body language natural and appropriate to the feel of the photo?

Does the person feel unique (can you sense personality in the person)?

Also consider what your use will be and the style you are looking for. Do you think the photographer can communicate that? If you like a photographer’s work, but don’t see exactly what you’re looking for, give them a call

It can be over-whelming to find a photographer. The market is saturated with too many to count and it’s tempting to just pick the first one you find. However, taking the time to find the right photographer for you is very important! (

showing that what the photographer knows about you and is working to say in your photos makes all the difference in the outcome. Definitely worth the watch!)

           Communication is key!

The photographer you choose should take the time to speak with you about what the photos will be used for, what you are trying to accomplish with them, and who the viewers will be. This is vital to creating your image!

How does the photographer make you feel during your call?

Be sure the person you choose is someone you feel comfortable with, someone you can be relaxed and open with. This is important because if you feel edgy, defensive, distant, or closed off with the photographer before the shoot, it will come through in the photo!

           Follow-up

Do they respond quickly to your calls, texts or emails? Do they provide the information you need in a timely manner as promised? These are all signs of a professional.

If, after speaking with the photographer, you feel like they are listening and responding to what your needs are, they make you feel comfortable and relaxed, and they follow-up in a professional why…BOOK THEM!

Why You Need a Professional Headshot

So you don’t want to “shell out” money for a professional headshot. “An iPhone selfie will do just fine!”. My cousin, Fabio, has a camera. I’ll just get him to take my photo.

Yes, if the message you want to send to a potential employer, investor, etc. is “I couldn’t be bothered” or “That’s good enough”.

Professionally, your business portrait is your logo. It is the first thing people see on LinkedIn. Dressing professionally, as appropriate to your industry or the position you aspire to, shows you take your career seriously. You look the part so people see you in the role. Being photographed in a professional way is equally important and only a professional photographer can do that! This shows you understand the environment of the industry you’re in or looking to get into, that you are serious about being successful and someone others want to work with.

“So can’t anyone help me with that?” No. Professional photographers have experience with lighting each person in the best way. Not everyone photographs well in the same light. We understand composition and how certain angles flatter people in different ways. Most importantly, we understand how to craft an image of a person that carries a message…the message you want. All this goes into creating portraits that show you are willing to invest in your career, make you look great and communicate who you are!

           Why a Professional Photographer Matters

"A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what is in front of it." - Cano

Does this surprise you? The ubiquity of easy pictures via smart phones has made us forget how important the person taking the photograph is in shaping the message people receive about the person in the photo. Ironically, photographic saturation and social media has made having a good professional photo of oneself even more important; LinkedIn demands professional photos that make potential employers, investors, etc. confident in your professionalism, for example.

Having a photographer that can set you apart is essential. Someone who can bring your personality to life, who can help you look the part, and can produce high quality images is very important! Just like any professional in a given industry, photographers have a studied understanding of every little thing that goes into a photo. We understand how lighting, angles, colors, and composition effects the message a photo gives about a person, even how what you are talking about during a shoot impacts the message. Your cousin with an iPhone can’t craft an image of you that sends the right professional message, but a professional photographer can.

Canon Australia produced a fascinating video about the impact a photographer’s image of you has on the final photograph.

           Definitely worth the 3 minutes!

A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what's in front of it. To prove this we invited six photographers to a portrait session with a twist.

Professional Business Headshots - A Time Investment Worth Making

Dallas Headshot Photography | Boutique Professional Headshot Sessions

Many headshot photographers are what I like to call “assembly-line shooters”. They get you in, sit you down at the same place and angle as everyone else they’ve photographed. They push the button a few times. You’re done.

Some of you may think, “Great! Exactly what I want. In and out. I’m busy!!”. I get it. You are a business person, not an actor or model. The last thing you want is to spend an hour of your precious day in front of a camera.

But, think of it this way. A thorough headshot session will get you images that tell a story about who you are. They will present your personality to the people you want to connect with. They will reflect you and make people feel connected to you before they even meet you. Most importantly for your time, they will last many years…but only if they’re done right! That assembly line photograph that got you in and out in just 5 minutes will likely not show much personality, will grow stale quickly and will probably not be something you want to use for very long or for anything other than the company intranet.

Take the time to find a headshot photographer who will work with you to bring out your personality and make sure the photo will stand out from everyone else’s. It’s a time investment worth every minute!

Aramark Dallas wanted headshots of each of their division directors. Each person was photographed with the same lighting setup and backdrop on the same day. However, taking just a little extra time with each person resulted in slightly different photos. When you feel comfortable with a photographer you will relax and your natural posture and personality with come through in the photos!

I often hear from clients that they don’t like being photographed or they always hate the way their photos turn out. I always respond, “Everyone takes great photos. You just haven’t had the right photographer yet!” I truly believe this, but sometimes, this fear is rooted in something very deep.

I often hear from clients that they don’t like being photographed or they always hate the way their photos turn out. I always respond, “Everyone takes great photos. You just haven’t had the right photographer yet!” I truly believe this, but sometimes, this fear is rooted in something very deep.

Take Kevin Goins, for example. Kevin is an amazing motivational speaker and creator of Owning Your Brilliance. The idea behind Owning Your Brilliance is, in part, “personal development by harnessing one’s unique brilliance”. So, I was surprised when, during our photoshoot, Kevin’s brilliance disappeared anytime I raised the camera to my eye.

This happens sometimes with clients and I’m always curious about the psychological reasons behind this. There are always reasons behind it.

Knowing Kevin personally, I felt comfortable asking him, “Kevin, what happened?! You disappeared.”

He laughed it off and expressed his discomfort at being in front of the camera. Finally, I asked him, “do you feel you don’t deserve to be seen?” DING, DING, DING!

It is common for people to feel they don’t deserve to be visible in this world. I was always one of them and this is probably one of the reasons I chose this profession years ago (though this is not the case now), but I am always saddened when I hear this because I know how lonely and hurtful it can be to feel invisible. I have many theories as to why this happens to some people (I mean, I think about people and how we are perceived and the image we put out into the world ALL THE TIME!).

It could be, we learned this mindset from our parents. Women are particularly bad about making disparaging comments about their own appearance, even in front of their kids, though fathers do this, too. (IF YOU ARE A PARENT, PLEASE DON’T DO THIS!). It could also be, we just don’t know what to do in front of a camera. Understandable.

Sometimes, though, it’s deeper. Maybe we never felt visible to others in our childhood or as young adults. Maybe we never felt attractive. Maybe we were bullied for our appearance or any other reason. Maybe we don’t fit the accepted perception of what is beautiful. Worst of all, we could have be told point-blank that we are ugly or not attractive enough. This will, naturally, make someone want to disappear.

In Kevin’s case, we needed to make him aware of it and make him feel comfortable staying visible so the camera could bear witness to his brilliance! What did we do…? “Where’s Kevin!” That’s right! Every time I raised the camera I would say, “Where’s Kevin?!” It became our mantra…and it WORKED!!! Kevin was able to stay present, relax, and let his brilliance shine…and we got GREAT photos!!

It’s important to remember, your photographer is NEVER judging you. They want your photos to be just as amazing as you want them to be; your photo is our reputation. Before your shoot, let your headshot photographer know you are uncomfortable having photos taken. Have a conversation about what can be done during the shoot to ensure you feel comfortable enough to let your guard down, so you shine. We won’t be put out by this. We are here to make sure you look your best in the photo and that means tapping into that unique, intangible thing that makes you…you!

So go out there and show the world your brilliance! You deserve it!
